TDK launches slim type SHG2A series SSDs

TDK Corporation announced today the launch in April 2010 of the SHG2A series of half slim type solid state drive (SSD) modules. The new modules, which have a maximum capacity of 32 GB, are about one half the size of a 1.8-inch hard disk drive (HDD).
The new drives are half slim Flash drives equipped with GBDriver RS2 series SATA controller ICs developed by TDK. They support high-speed access with an effective read speed of 95 MB/s and an effective write speed of 55 MB/s. They also feature powerful error correction capabilities scalable to 15-bit/sector error correction code (ECC), providing high levels of data reliability. In addition, the use of an internal power supply protection circuit prevents errors in the event of power interruption. These SATA Flash drives are also equipped with an auto-recovery function that automatically recovers data when read disturbance errors occur from repeated reading of data, making them ideal for automotive applications such as car navigation systems.

TDK has achieved substantial increases in the life spans of semiconductor memory storage devices. A static wear leveling function developed by TDK equalizes data writing among all of the Flash memory blocks, maximizing the life span of the memory. SMART (self-monitoring and analysis reporting technology) data makes it possible to grasp the number of times each memory block is rewritten (erased) and diagnose drive status in real-time, facilitating quantitative assessment of the life spans of silicon disks used in systems. In addition, a life span assessment tool is being made publicly available for the first time in the world and can be downloaded from TDK’s website, enabling customers to monitor the life span of half slim SSDs in their systems.
The drives also feature an advanced encryption function using the 128-bit AES encryption that has been registered as United States Department of Commerce Federal Information Processing Standards FIPS PUB197. Data is automatically encrypted before writing to the Flash memory, preventing data leaks and tampering. A high level of storage security is provided to prevent unauthorized copying and other data risks by using both ATA standard security functions and an original TDK password lock function.
TDK’s SHG2A series of industrial half slim SSDs are suitable as replacements for HDDs and provide high-speed performance, data reliability, storage life span, and data security at the highest levels in the industry. TDK also provides technical support through a specialized field application engineer (FAE) program to ensure customer confidence in these new products.

In the wake of the tremendous success of BeoVision 10-40, the slim 40-inch flat screen TV that Bang & Olufsen launched in October 2009, the company is expanding its portfolio with a new member of the BeoVision 10 family – now available in 46 inches.
The extremely positive reception of BeoVision 10-40 has resulted in Bang & Olufsen deciding to accelerate its introduction of a larger member to the BeoVision 10 family. A 46-inch version of BeoVision 10 will be available in Bang & Olufsen stores from April 2010.

Although built on the same chassis as BeoVision 10-40, the 46-inch version introduces a few new additions. Besides giving a viewing area that is 32 percent bigger in square centimetres, the visual appearance of the 46-inch TV differs a bit from that of its smaller sibling. The rear cover has been changed to white instead of black, giving the product a lighter expression and supporting the concept of having a TV that blends in with the wall.
BeoVision 10-46 is a full HD TV with a new and exciting LED-based, 200/240 Hz LCD panel with impressive picture performance applying the absolute latest picture improvements technologies. The 200/240 Hz technology combined with sophisticated motion compensation technologies take the motion performance of the LCD panel to a yet unseen level of smoothness.

Xbox360 will gets a USB memory storage support via system update over Xbox LIVE  on April 6th. This will allow you USB flash drives to be used for storing game saves, demos, movies, profiles and more.
After update,  you could use USB flash drives up to 16GB , “USB Hard drives may work, but like flash memory, you’ll only be able to use up to 16GB of space. Since performance on flash based USB storage is usually better, I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it’s just going to give you a MUCH better experience.”

A couple of points:
  • You can have 2 devices connected to the console at a time, enabling up to 32GB of simultaneous storage.
  • The system won’t just configure the device once it is connected to the console. You’ll need to head to the memory area in system settings, select your USB Device, and choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has begun shipping samples of the industry’s highest-density memory module for server systems. The 32 gigabyte (GB) module has been designed for use in advanced servers, which require high-density and high-performance features at low-power consumption levels.
According to Soo-In Cho, president and general manager of Samsung Electronics Memory Division, “Samsung continues to set the pace in advanced memory for high-end server applications by offering 40nm-class 32GB memory modules to reach previously unattainable levels of system capacity. In just 10 months, Samsung has now secured the best competitive advantage with the broadest portfolio of 40nm-class DDR3 based memory solutions in the industry since the 40nm-class DRAM was first produced last July.”

Samsung is using the industries highest-density monolithic DDR3 device – a 40-nanometer (nm) class, four gigabit (Gb) DDR3 chip – as the building block for the new 32GB module. This comes just one year after the company announced its 50nm-class 2Gb based, 16GB registered dual inline memory module (RDIMM) last March.
The highly-efficient 32GB RDIMM consists of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips that can perform at equal or greater levels to a 40nm-based 16GB RDIMM with no increase in power consumption.

By equipping a dual CPU, two-way server with 32GB modules, a server system can have up to 384GB of memory. This allows for doubling the previously largest density of 192GBs per server with a power increase of less than five percent over that needed for a 16GB module-based system.
In addition, replacing 12 DRAM modules of 16GB density with just six 32GB modules would achieve a 192GB total density, while allowing the DRAM operating speed in a two-way server system to rise by 33 percent from 800 megabit per second (Mbps) to 1,066Mbps, as power is cut by 40 percent.
In high-performance, four-way servers using 16GB modules, one terabyte of DRAM would be commonplace. By using 32GB RDIMMs, Samsung is moving toward providing four-way servers with 2TB of DRAM each, a migration that it believes will spur introduction of diverse software and a broader scale of server applications.
Mass production of the 32GB RDIMM is slated to begin next month.


Victorinox, the family company behind the famed Swiss Army Knife, has launched a pioneering memory stick design at an event held at its European flagship store on London’s New Bond Street. The device is, says the company, the most secure of its kind available to the public. It uses several layers of security including fingerprint identification and a thermal sensor – so that the finger alone, detached from the body, will still not give access to the memory stick’s contents. The Victorinox Secure has also been made tamper-proof. Any attempt to forcibly open it triggers a self-destruct mechanism that irrevocably burns its CPU and memory chip.
Victorinox was so confident of its new product’s elite security standards that it offered a £100,000 prize to a team of professional hackers if they could break into it during the two hours the launch event lasted. The money went uncollected. The event was attended by Victorinox’s CEO Carl Elsener Jr. and the Victorinox Secure’s designer Martin Kuster, a technology security specialist. “Life is becoming more digital every day,” says Kuster. “And yet people do so little to protect their data. The world’s most common password is ‘12345′ – and even encryption can be broken given time.”

As the world’s first Full LED 3D TV, the LX9500 uses an innovative backlight structure to deliver spectacular pictures for the ultimate 3D experience. Illuminated by panels of LEDs directly behind the screen (the 55-inch model boasts 1,200 LEDs), the Full LED display provides images of exceptional brightness and clarify for unrivalled picture quality. Along with all the advantages of Full LED, the LX9500’s innovative exterior is also geared toward creating the ultimate 3D experience. With its slim and sleek INFINIA design, the LX9500 not only draws attention with its 22.3mm slim body but also boasts a 16mm super-narrow bezel that allows for fuller and more expansive 3D images that draws viewers in.
In another first for the industry, the LX9500 supports the Multi Picture Format, the 3D picture standard that enables users to create and enjoy 3D content effortlessly. On the LX9500, this means viewers can immediately see images snapped with 3D cameras without having to first convert them on their PCs.
The LX9500 employs shutter glasses (model: AG-S100) that adds depth by alternatively blocking one lens at a time in sync with the screen’s refresh rate. The glasses are comfortable enough to wear for an extended period of time and recharge via USB for up to 40 hours of uninterrupted viewing pleasure.
LG is committed to securing a dominant position in this fast growing market expected to surpass 80 million units by 2014, and aiming to achieve 25 percent share of 3D market in 2010.
