When you go shopping for a new digital camcorder, you'll be faced with a hug number of specifications and features. To stop yourself from getting overwhelmed, do some research beforehand.

An important thing to consider is the size of the viewing, or LCD, screen. The LCD screen is both the viewfinder and the playback screen, so having a large one would be beneficial. The cost will go up as the size of the screen goes up, however.

Ensure you understand the zoom feature and how it works. There two kinds of zooms, the optical zoom and the digital zoom. An optical zoom refers to the lens capability itself and zooms in on a subject before it is digitally recorded. The digital zoom is done by taking the digital image that has been recorded and magnifying it. The optical zoom does not result in any video degradation, but as the digital zoom is just magnifying the recorded image, the image will lose quality as you zoom. So a high optical zoom is better.

Let's face it, we all probably been caught out at one point by the battery running out on the camcorder. Normally battery running time is just afew hours, so you should buy a camcorder that uses lithium ion batteries - they last longer and are easier to maintain than NiMH (nickel-metal-hydride) batteries.

A key consideration when buying a digital camcorders is the weight the unit. Weight will have a large impact on how much you use your camera. A camcorder might be the best on the market by far, but if it's just too heavy to use, then it will end up gathering dust in your cupboard.

You want to make sure the digital camcorder you choose has a decent picture resolution. Having a higher resolution, measured in mega pixels, will allow you to capture photographs with better clarity. Generally speaking, you are better of getting a camcorder with the highest mega pixels you can find, bear in mind the price will be higher.

The make and model of the camcorder are important, it is best to stick to a familiar name, a manufacturer that has been in the business for a while and that you know you can trust, like JVC, Samsung, and Sony
